Tips on Repainting a Deck

A freshly painted deck is a warm, alluring ambiance that adds unmatched personality to a home’s beauty and sets the stage for the numerous outdoor activities. However, the deck is exposed to weather elements, and it can fade and become uninviting over time. Fortunately, you can repaint the deck to reinstate its former glory.

Things You’ll Need

  • Power washer or a stiff-bristle broom with synthetic bristles and water
  • Deck cleaning products
  • Paint stripper
  • Painter’s tape
  • Plastic sheeting
  • The paint
  • Paint brushes (include the long-handled brush), roller, tray, and a sprayer

The Procedure

To repaint your deck, you’ll need to:

Prepare the Deck

Sweep to remove dirt, dust, or any other debris and examine the deck to fix any structural component problems. For instance, you should hammer down popped nails, tighten loose screws, and replace the damaged boards.

Protect the Surrounding Areas

Using the painter’s tape, cover all the areas near the deck that you need to protect from the cleaning products and paint. This could include areas that are linked up to the house or concrete surfaces as well as nearby plants with plastic sheeting.

Remove Old Paint or Stain

Cover the deck with the paint stripper and wait for the time recommended by the stripper manufacturer (usually 10 to 30 minutes). The paint will bubble and warp allowing you to strip and scrape it off.

Clean the Deck

Paints stick better to a clean surface. That means you have to thoroughly clean and scrub the deck beforehand. You can employ different cleaning methods, including sanding, pressure washing, or broom scrubbing. Ensure that you rinse the deck with clean water and allow it to dry thoroughly.

Apply the Paint

As soon as the deck is clean and dry, apply the paint using a sprayer. Load the sprayer with the paint and spray along the wood grain to achieve the best results. You should (or have someone) use the paintbrush or the long-handled brush to smooth out any pools and get the paint into the corners and fissures.

Reapply the Paint

After you apply the first coat, let it dry thoroughly before applying a subsequent coat. The subsequent layer will improve the appearance as well as help prolong the lifespan of the new finish.

Warnings

  • Don’t paint in direct sunlight as the rays could interfere with color uniformity and adherence of the product.
  • Always wear protective clothes, rubber gloves, and eye protective gears when working with cleaners and paints.
